Ash Wednesday Service – February 17 at 7:00 p.m. PDF Print E-mail
Ash Wednesday services have historically been the kick-off for the 40 days of Lent leading us to Holy Week and Easter.  The root origin of this custom in the church has been lost in the annals of pre-history, but we find references to the practice in the Old Testament.  The prophet Joel called for repentance by putting on sackcloth and rolling in ashes.  The prophet Isaiah on the other hand critiques the practice as insufficient to please God. Probably the most famous instance of ashes being used as a sign of repentance came on the heels of Jonah’s preaching to Nineveh.  The King of Nineveh responded to Jonah’s preaching when he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in the ashes.  All of Nineveh repented!  What do ashes mean for us today? What awaits us after our 40 days of reflection and repentance? Please join us for the Ash Wednesday service and find out. You will be encouraged!
